Teaching Philosophy

Teachers are a kaleidoscope that help children see the world from different points of view.
– Olivia Soderborg

A kaleidoscope is the symbol of who I am as a teacher and learner.

I spend my life fascinated by the myriad of perspectives and paradigms meant to explain the world and human experience. I read voraciously because it gives me a chance to “try on” other perspectives and experience the world through new and interesting points of view.

I was drawn to teaching because I found that the ideas and perspectives that most delighted me were those of children. I love looking at the world through childrens' eyes. Because of this, I believe in opening up conversations with students about their views and understanding of life, asking questions that help them re-shape and re-structure their perspectives.

I believe that a rigorous, content-based curriculum rich in the arts will most fully prepare students to be successful citizens and prepare them for their future careers. These children are the future leaders of this country, and one of my goals as a teacher is to make character education an integral part of all that I do, so that my students can make a positive difference in the world.
